To our community,
The poor air quality over the past week was a reminder that we cannot take our environment for granted. The wildfires that hit our state get bigger every year, and the impact only magnifies. Being prepared for an emergency seems to be a way of life now, but we must explore ways to mitigate these problems as well. The good news is that changes in the weather will help air quality get better. Please remember to check the air quality before you plan outdoor activities.

Last week, VAR kept our programming running. We brought back Betty and Ly from Santa Clara County to update us about moving from the purple tier into the red tier and what it means for us. We hosted another session of our SEEDS program with Jimmy Patel Nguyen - founder of Refugene - to talk about recording our family history. We also had a movie night to watch the Netflix Documentary “13th” to keep ourselves motivated and educated about how we can be strong allies with the Black community.

CITY OF SAN JOSE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH CENSUS
Though there is some uncertainty as to when the Census period will end, we must still take advantage of the time that we have. The City of San Jose is looking for volunteers to help do more outreach to our community, particularly those who are bilingual. This is important because every person who is counted can bring between $1500 to $2000 to San Jose through grants and federal funding. If you are interested in helping, please reach out to Nguyen Pham at 408-478-5965 or nguyen.pham@sanjoseca.gov.
Also, enumerators are out and about to visit the households that have not yet filled out their Census. They are here to help our community! We have put together a video to share what to expect if an enumerator visits you!
VIETNAMESE ADVOCACY MONTH CONTINUES
VAR’s advocacy extends into civic engagement and the November elections as well as we prepare summaries of the issues that we will be called to vote on. This Saturday will be the 2020 Silicon Valley Asian American and Pacific Islander Civic Leadership Program, which you can still register for. Additionally, the VAR Board has voted to support Proposition 16, which would repeal Proposition 209 and provide more opportunities for communities of color to access higher education and business support.
Quick Note
This week’s pop-up testing site is at the Overfelt High School gym (1835 Cunningham Avenue). You can visit anytime through September 18, from 11am to 5pm.
Stay safe and stay healthy!
